Carbon offset projects in times of Corona
April 1, 2020How safe drinking water can help protect the climate and ensure sanitation
Even in times of the global Corona pandemic our carbon offset projects continue to run and provide additional benefits through their positive impact on local public health and sanitation.
So is our safe drinking water project in Uganda not only continuing, but is also seen as an important means of ensuring better hygiene for the local communities. The project owners are currently teaming up with NGOs and the ministry of health to provide filters for areas most at risk in Kampala.
Federico Gallo, project coordinator: “The financing support of this project ensures not only that this essential service continues to be provided, but is also strengthened to help cope with the pandemic, in a country that has no way near the resources of the wealthier countries have to fight covid.”
Before, families had been using wood, charcoal or other biomass for boiling to get safe drinking water. This also putted lots of pressure on the respective forests. On the other side, many people are still unaware of the health risks and continue to drink unsafe water. To help address the challenges related to this, the project manufactures and distributes the so-called Purifaaya ceramic water filters to low income families, allowing them to purify and disinfect drinking water at home. The project aims to reach 5 million Ugandans, or 14 percent of the population, by 2025.
