Even greater transparency and assurance for consumers: ClimatePartner introduces new labels
April 17, 2023New label offers even more insight into companies’ climate action commitments
- The "ClimatePartner certified" label sends a clear message: the emissions of a product have been verifiably reduced, and the responsible company has set further reduction targets.
- With the "Financial climate contribution" label, companies show that they are committed to climate action by financing climate projects, for example for one-off projects such as events.
- With the click of a mouse, consumers can transparently see all the measures behind the labels.
Assurance, transparency, and efficacy – this is what consumers expect when it comes to climate action by companies and for products.
ClimatePartner is offering a new solution that allows consumers to see at a glance how companies are contributing to climate action. It combines the desire for climate-conscious shopping with clear and comprehensible product labelling, while at the same time motivating companies to do even more to protect the climate. At the heart of this new strategy is the "ClimatePartner certified" label, which provides transparent answers to key questions where they are needed most, for example when decision-making at the point of sale. Examples include the volume of emissions generated by a company or product, whether the company uses renewable energy, whether the product contains recycled materials, and much more.
With ClimatePartner certified, companies commit to firmly integrating climate action goals into their corporate strategy and implementing reduction measures. The ClimatePartner certified label confirms in detail that:
The carbon footprint of the company or product is calculated regularly. The company has set targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Specific reduction measures have already been implemented. The company supports verified climate projects. These climate action measures are communicated transparently via an individual climate-ID page.
Consumers who see the ClimatePartner certified label on products will be able to follow the entire climate action journey of a company in detail, via a link or QR code to a unique climate-ID page. For example, it will be visible at a glance how much carbon a company emits, what measures a company has taken for climate action, and what goals it will pursue in the future.
Moritz Lehmkuhl, founder and CEO of ClimatePartner, explains: "With the stricter requirements and enhanced label and ID tracking, we are taking climate action to a new level. Wherever consumers see the ClimatePartner certified label, they can be assured of complete transparency and a trustworthy guide for their purchasing decision."
The ClimatePartner certified label deliberately avoids making a claim such as “carbon neutral” and instead focuses on the steps behind a company's climate action commitment. It stands for ambitious climate action measures and targets from companies and confirms their implementation. It is a clear sign of a company's commitment to actively contribute to climate action and to provide the necessary transparency.
"Financial climate contribution" label will replace the previous "carbon neutral" label
The financing of effective climate projects remains an indispensable part of global climate action. ClimatePartner also wants to involve those companies that do not yet meet the higher requirements for ClimatePartner certified. The same applies to one-off projects, and services such as events, for which long-term reduction targets cannot be defined. With the "Financial climate contribution" label, these organisations can demonstrate their commitment to climate action through financing climate projects.
Here, too, the label offers the greatest possible transparency in terms of credible consumer information. ClimatePartner’s established ID tracking via a website link and optional QR code provides consumers with comprehensive details on the climate projects financed.
The previous ClimatePartner "carbon neutral" label will be phased out after a transitional period.
